FTA awards grants for research into fuel cell bus $ 16.6 million

While we were hanging jealously of southern Korea working electric bus system, Christmas apparently soon came a couple of lucky U.S. grants research - 16.6 million in federal transit administration-shaped bus fuel cell. Pasadena based Calstart snagged almost of of $ 10.2 million and it will funnel 70 per cent of the funds to the development of the first phase of a more durable low-cost fuel cell power system. Calstart, then becomes his remaining $ 2.9 million in collaboration with the regional Chicago Transit Authority to develop and test the viability of cold climates fuel cell bus fleets. The center of transportation and the environment in Atlanta was another project to hit train sauce of federal funds. Received a hefty $ 6.4 million to disseminate through six different projects gets into everything from 35 feet fast load bus versions of similar lithium ion fuel cell development for the improvement of existing platforms hybrid bus. Federal pork for the development of fuel cell DSLR unfortunately lost the cut. For the full scoop hit until the press release after the holidays. WASHINGTON - outstanding new technologies to allow operation in cold climates fuel cell buses is one of the research projects to receive money from the federal administration (FTA) transit program national fuel cell bus United States Ray LaHood transport Secretary announced today.

The center of transportation and the environment in Atlanta will receive 6.42 million dollars and CALSTART in Pasadena, California, will receive 10.18 million dollars for coordinating research among manufacturers of fuel cells, engineering companies and agencies nationwide transit.

"Obama management is proud to partner with researchers who are exploring ways to greener, more efficient buses of power," said Secretary LaHood. "Adapting the technology fuel cell buses will result a cleaner environment and quietest streets worldwide."

"Transit industry should continue being at the forefront of green job creation and the establishment of globally competitive technologies here at home in the United States," said the FTA administrator Peter Rogoff. "As we move forward clean and efficient bus projects from the drawing board to the street, we are moving the nation closer to energy independence and a cleaner environment."

Other projects funded this year include an effort to develop a smaller, less costly fuel cell power system and more durable will allow U.S. fuel cell bus commercialization, and an effort to develop and demonstrate a light bus highly efficient that incorporates an improved and enhanced bus design electric hybrid drive.

The programme aims to facilitate the development of commercially viable fuel cell bus technologies and to increase public acceptance of fuel cell vehicles. The program is one of the three environmentally friendly FTA concession contests whose winners have been announced recently. The others are reduction (TIGGER) energy and clean fuels programs and greenhouse gas transit investments.
